On March 17, 2024, the long-awaited premiere of Giacomo Puccini’s opera Tosca took place at the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari (Italy), where the outstanding opera singer Veronika Dzhioeva made her debut in the leading role. This production, marking the centenary of the composer’s death, featured the direction of Pier Francesco Maestrini, updated by Daniela Zedda, with Beatrice Venezi conducting the orchestra.
Dzhioeva, whose performance captivated critics, appeared on stage as a strong and untamed Tosca, showcasing remarkable vocal and theatrical artistry. Rivistamusica praised her performance, stating:
"The lead role was performed by Veronika Dzhioeva, who portrayed Tosca as a proud and untamed heroine with notable vocal potential and excellent stage presence. The Ossetian soprano confidently tackled her part: from the passionate duet in Act 1 to the second act, where every phrase was filled with intensity. Her Tosca was performed in a verismo style, interrupted only by the lyrical aria 'Vissi d’arte,' where the singer demonstrated a rich palette of vocal nuances and delicate phrasing."
The opera was presented in an updated version that had already been staged in Cagliari in 2019. The sets, created by Juan Guillermo Nova, recreated the dark atmosphere of historical events, while Marco Nateri's costumes added authenticity to the production. Maestro Venezi, with respect for tradition, emphasized the verismo character of Puccini’s music, ensuring a powerful and cohesive sound.
